My next challenge - The WAAT4 Challenge with Young Dragons

Between Thursday 20th – Saturday 22nd June, I'm teaming up with young people from HRH The Prince of Wales’ Young Dragons initiative and Mentors from the British Inspiration Trust (BRIT) to complete the WAAT4 Challenge in the Brecon Beacons.

The WAAT4 Challenge, a 40k circular team navigation challenge, is set amongst the iconic Pen y Fan in the Brecon Beacons and features elements of two Special Forces selection routes.

We are setting off on Thursday morning and will finish in time to greet and present prizes to approximately 100 teams who will be completing their WAAT4 Challenge all on one day (the Saturday).

Now in its fifth year, the event is organised by a small team from Dyfed-Powys Police, supported by the Brecon Mountain Rescue Team, Wales Air Ambulance, the Gurkhas and The Castle Hotel. Their simple objective is to raise money for good causes.

My objectives for the event are threefold;

1. Champion and connect numerous Charities, Youth Organisations and Emergency Services, including the event's two permanent charities; Brecon Mountain Rescue and the Wales Air Ambulance

2. Showcase how the combination of inspirational BRIT Mentors and community-focussed youth organisations can give young people new focus and confidence

3. Raise awareness of the Young Dragons and help them identify Young Representatives to act as ambassadors for the organisations within the "Young Dragons"

The Young Dragons/Dreigiau Ifanc http://www.youngdragons.org.uk is a partnership led by HRH The Prince of Wales that aims to increase opportunities for young people to engage in structured activities that benefit local communities and involves collaboration between uniformed youth organisations (Scouts, Girlguiding, St John Ambulance, Military Cadets, Police Cadets, Fire Cadets, Boys and Girls Brigade, etc.), local authority Youth Services and Department of Education; and third sector organisations.

Their objectives are:

  • To share information and resources.
  • Work together to recruit, train and retain volunteers.
  • Maintain and support existing youth groups/units.
  • Provide guidance and support to new youth groups/units.
